What was it?

In July 2022 at HMP Five Wells we ran IGNITE, a 'play in a week' residential project that introduces a group to acting, performance and a collaborative devising process across 5 intensive days.

In partnership with an extraordinary, energised and creative group of sixteen, we created THE BEST THING THAT NEVER HAPPENED, performed on the final day to a packed audience of visitors, prison staff and other residents

THE BEST THING THAT NEVER HAPPENED was an anthology piece that explored ideas around hope & chance asking if / why we keep betting on ourselves when the going gets tough.

Cast Feedback

  • There was two things I wanted to achieve - come out of my shell, and to build my confidence. I feel like I've achieved both of those in bucketloads.

  • That's something I never thought I'd be able to, to speak in front of an audience, let alone act...yeah I feel amazing.

  • I came down because it seemed important, it seemed like something good. It's been mad, it's been crazy, its been good. I don't like to praise myself, but a lot of people said I was all right...so I'm going to take their word for it.

  • I'd say confidence I've gained from doing Kestrel...you lot, the team, amazing. It was brilliant to be honest.
